Why Us? Workshop (1.5 hours)

One of the most common supplemental essays is the "Why Us" essay, in which colleges ask students why they have chosen to apply to their institution specifically. Through lecture, reviewing sample essays, and engaging in interactive exercises, this workshop will teach students how to write standout supplements. After this workshop, students will receive Admission Ignition's Why Us essay guide, which has sentence starters, brainstorming exercises, and sample essays. This is a special opportunity to engage with writing skills in a different forum, which is a great compliment to our one-on-one sessions.

Goals:

  1. Define the purpose of the Why Us? essay
  2. Engage in interactive exercises and strategy building
  3. Evaluate sample essays
  4. Define the key elements of a Why Us? essay

Personal Statement Workshop (2.5 hours)

Unlike the traditional English essay, this essay requires a different skill set. In this workshop, participants will learn the purpose of the personal statement and cliche topics to avoid. After reviewing the key ingredients of successful college essays, participants will read sample college essays and evaluate them using these criteria in a group discussion. Then, the facilitator will guide students through brainstorming exercises to help them determine a topic, helping to make a daunting first step feel more approachable. This presentation is ideal for juniors in the spring or summer before senior year and seniors in the fall. If desired, the workshop can be broken into three 50-minute sessions.

Goals:

  1. Define the purpose of the college essay
  2. Engage in brainstorming exercises
  3. Review cliché topics
  4. Define key elements of a successful college essay
  5. Read sample essays and identify key elements

Personal Statement and Activity Essay Workshop (3 hours)

This workshop combines all the elements of our Personal Statement Workshop with a dedicated focus on the activity supplemental essay. Extracurricular activity essays are an opportunity for students to use jobs, internships, and clubs to demonstrate their unique values. Students will read and evaluate sample essays in both categories.

Goals:

  1. Define the purpose and key elements of a successful college essay
  2. Engage in brainstorming exercises and answer questions
  3. Learn about “the activity” supplemental essay
  4. Read sample essays and identify key elements for both the personal statement and activity essay

Supplemental Essay Workshop (3 hours)

In this workshop, participants will learn about three common supplemental essay questions: the activity essay, “why us?” essay, and “identity” essay. Most students will have to write two of these three types of supplemental essays unless they are only applying to schools within the state of Florida. These shorter essays allow admissions officers the opportunity to envision how the student can be an asset to the campus community.

First, students will collaboratively read and evaluate sample essays. Then, the facilitator will introduce brainstorming exercises and deliver key insights that will help students write stand-out essays. Students will leave feeling empowered to start writing their supplemental essays. This presentation will benefit high school juniors in the spring and high school seniors in the fall.

Goals:

  1. Learn about three common supplemental essay questions: the activity essay, “why us?” essay, and “why major?” essay
  2. Read and evaluate sample essays
  3. Introduce brainstorming exercises and deliver key insights that will help students write stand-out essays
  4. Empower students to begin writing supplemental essays
